George Downey grew up in a small town near Boston, Massachusetts. He had an interest in the military which led him to West Point. While there he acquired his EMS certification. He had an opportunity to become an officer but didn’t feel comfortable commanding soldiers in battle. He dropped out of the Academy and got a job on a cruise ship. During one of the excursions, he encountered an EMS team. As they departed the ship he jokingly asked if they had an opening. They did so he joined the team. After serving in a variety of jobs in locations from Massachusetts to California, he realized he had ADHD. Reflecting on his behavior pattern, he discovered what he enjoyed most: learning new things and teaching it to others. With this knowledge, he turned what others might consider a liability into a strength.
