Episode Synopsis

1. Today, on the 20th day of the government shutdown, furlough notices are now going out to 14-hundred employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration. That leaves some 400 others to oversee the safety of the nation's nuclear arsenal. People worry about national security threats now. The Department of Defense has been pushing the NNSA to produce new and modernized weapons on time. The government shutdown could delay that schedule significantly, depending on how long it lasts.

2. One week from today, your commute in and out of downtown will be a little stickier. Construction on the I-94 widening project is scheduled to begin October 27th with major road impacts beginning Nov. 3rd. Initial construction will focus on the “West Leg”, the area between 70th street and Zablocki Drive to expand the freeway to four lanes in both directions. Long-term single lane closure in each direction of I-94 between 70th Street and Zablocki. Long-term closure of the Hawley Road Interchange. Long-term closure of the southbound WIS 175 system ramp to westbound I-94. Long-term closure of the 68th Street entrance ramp to eastbound I-94. A 30-day closure of the southbound WIS 175 exit ramp to Frederick Miller Way. Work on this leg of the project is expected to be completed in late 2028. The larger 3.5-mile project calls for rebuilding the aging freeway between N. 16th and N. 70th streets and a complete replacement of the Stadium Interchange. The six-lane roadway will be expanded to eight lanes as part of the project. Overall, construction is expected to last through 2033 at a cost of $1.7 billion dollars.

3. Mark it down as one of the largest single-day protests in U.S. history. Millions turned out over the weekend, including here in Wisconsin, for the "No Kings" rallies. The anti-Trump protests were mocked by the President online. Milwaukee and Madison were among the cities here in Wisconsin that held No Kings protests. Thousands of people packed Milwaukee's Cathedral Square. Saturday marked the second round of No Kings protests across the country. The first was back in June.
