Episode Synopsis

Hyrum Atkinson was born in Udall, Kansas, and spent much of his youth moving frequently, rarely living in one place for more than a year or two. He is one of seven children and grew up in the middle of a busy, lively home with a devoted single mother who raised six of the siblings; one of his older sisters lived with their father. Hyrum has two older sisters, an older brother, two younger sisters, and a younger brother. From a young age, he developed a fascination with creating and building, nurturing a desire to become a maker capable of bringing ideas to life through hands-on creativity. Although a full-time mission didn’t feel right for him at age eighteen, the decision not to go left Hyrum feeling somewhat isolated, and he eventually stopped attending church. Several years later, seeking direction and new challenges, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Stationed primarily at Camp Pendleton in California, he also deployed to Bahrain. Before joining the Marine Corps, he had worked in a variety of blue-collar positions, driven by a personal goal to understand every step of building a home. These experiences shaped both his work ethic and his appreciation for practical skill and craftsmanship. After his military service, Hyrum began regularly attending church again, an important milestone in his personal spiritual path. During this period of transition, he spent some time working as an asphalt inspector, piddling around in the field while considering his next steps. Ultimately, he decided to pursue further education and enrolled at Wichita State University, where he is now studying mechanical engineering. His love of creating continues to grow, and he has become deeply involved in 3D printing both as a hobby and as a developing skill he hopes to integrate into a future business venture.Hyrum currently serves as the second counselor in the Wichita YSA bishopric and as a temple ordinance worker. He previously served on the stake high council.
