Why did Jesus ignore the scribes and Pharisees and stoop down to write in the floor? What did he write? What caused the accusers of the woman to be smitten in their consciences and to leave one by one? This sermon shows how the story of the woman accused of adultery in chapter 8 of John’s Gospel provides the answer to the question stalking the chapter 7: who is Jesus? Avoiding the trap they set for him, Jesus points to the law of casting the first stone (Deuteronomy 17:7), which followed the law relating to witnesses (Deuteronomy 17:6) to demonstrate to these men their lawlessness — and in so doing showing that he is the true Lawkeeper and Lawgiver, and the true Christ of God.
