Runcorn, Cheshire, 1978. It’s New Years Eve and the area is preparing for the usual night of revelry, seeing out the old and ringing in the new. But for Andrew McDonald, it was to be a night to remember for a different reason. Andrew had been out visiting mates and was cycling home, when he heard a strange ringing or buzzing in his ears. Despite the early nights of January, he noticed the area around him had gone particularly dark. Stopping his bike and looking up he saw a massive circular object above him. Worse, at the centre as a bright light – but it didn’t hurt his eyes. Suddenly the light emitted a powerful beam to where he was standing, and he felt himself being pulled at towards the craft. But it couldn’t seem to live him and his bicycle. After about a minutes’ worth of strain whatever it was decided the Young McDonald wasn’t worth the effort, retracted it’s light and flew off. Andrew McDonald didn’t really care for going out on his bike after that, despite the probability his bike was the only thing which saved him from a very strange experience indeed. But Andrew wasn’t the only person to see odd things that night. Reports of strange lights and objects flooding in from all over the UK. Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Norwich and even Scotland had reports flooding in of the strange and unEarthly. In London, Patricia White was heading home after finishing her shift at a popular nightclub. Her regular driver from a local taxi firm looked up and saw a bright, metallic object over their car as they headed away from Wembley. On the object a series of pulsating lights seemed to flash in some sequence, and while the machine seemed to be the size of several houses, it made no sound. It followed them, over the houses and down the streets until they reached Harrow, when – perhaps not wishing to enter the area – it zoomed away. All the time the drivers’ radio ceased to work and there was difficult with the electrics in the car. Once it had abandoned the chase, everything returned to normal.
