“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” That’s the opening line of the Declaration of Independence. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, it asserts that all individuals have inherent, God-given rights that cannot be taken away by any government. They can’t be taken by government because they were not granted by government.
