Welcome to “Lost in translation a Japanese life in Vancouver”. In this podcast, Charlie, an introverted, friendless Japanese woman living in Vancouver, talks about life in Vancouver in order to improve her English. I hope you enjoy listening.
It's been a while since my last podcast upload, that's because I was unwell and struggling with a persistent cough. However, I'm back now and ready to resume my regular posting schedule!
One day when I was working at the restaurant, I saw something interesting. A certain Canadian showed another Canadian how to use chopsticks. I had completely forgotten that some people cannot use chopsticks because there are so many people who can use chopsticks well. At the moment, I was wondering if I can explain how to use chopsticks to others in English. What if I had a friend who cannot use chopsticks and brought them to a Japanese restaurant? It seems difficult to explain. So I am going to practice explaining how to use it today. Let’s get it together.
Step1, Hold one chopstick with your dominant hand, as if you were holding a pencil. Place it between the tip of your thumb and the side of your index finger, and support it with the tip of your middle finger.
Hold the second chopstick between the tip of your index finger and the base of your thumb. This chopstick should be positioned slightly below the first chopstick.
Use your fingers to move the top chopstick up and down, while keeping the bottom chopstick stationary. Practice picking up small objects like beans or pieces of paper to get a feel for how the chopsticks move.
Encourage the person you are teaching to hold their chopsticks in the same way, and guide them through the process of picking up small objects. You can also provide tips such as using the chopsticks to "pinch" the object, rather than trying to scoop it up.
Remind the person to keep their fingers relaxed and not to grip the chopsticks too tightly. It may take some practice to get the hang of using chopsticks, so be patient and encouraging.
Finally, remind the person to avoid using chopsticks to point at people or to leave them sticking out of a bowl of food, as these are considered impolite in some cultures.
The article says, With a little practice and guidance, most people can learn how to use chopsticks!
Okay! You guys should be ready to teach how to use chopsticks. Let’s try it out!
