We talk about the origins of cities and contradict the commonly held belief that proto-state governance—e.g. centralized, hierarchical administration—developed in tandem with urban society. Instead, early cities existed for hundreds of years, organized by bottom-up self-governance, before the palaces and temples became the centers of urban power.
