"What Am I Masking?" – Self Diagnosis Is Valid AF
#ADHD #ADHDHyperfocus #ADHDInattention
Sarah shares a video from @AllForTheDopamine about self diagnosis for autism. In this video by Adrienne Marcellis explains that many people with autism have cycled through a number of diagnoses and medication plans to no avail. And then they learn about autism and have that "aha" moment. Adrienne goes on to say that it's the rare individual who "self-diagnoses" for attention. They encourage anyone who thinks they may have autism to get tested so they don't misdiagnose themselves and miss out on effective supports.
Sarah brought this video because she still isn't sure what her special flavor of neurodivergence is but has found great relief from learning about both autism and how ADHD presents differently in women.
Krista raises the issue of self-diagnosis as a parent with a child who doesn't use the autistic label and prefers the term neurospicy. She talks about how this next generation of neurodivergent people views masking differently and doesn't rely on it in the same way. Everyone masks, neurospicy or not, as an expression of social norms like letting the elderly person cut in front of you in line even when you may not be feeling it.
In the end, it's about knowing ourselves and how to integrate into the world.
Recorded on 03/08/24.
