Nova Scotia Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard discusses why the date is significant, and why it's important for reparations and reconciliation with African Canadians. In 2018 she introduced a private members bill looking for this date to be recognized in Canada on the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British Colonies in 1834.
