Listen "This Mysterious Cloud Killed Thousands"
Episode Synopsis
In August 1986, a limnic eruption occurred at Lake Nyos, a crater lake in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. The eruption released a large cloud of carbon dioxide (CO2), which descended into nearby villages. Since CO2 is heavier than air, it displaced oxygen, causing asphyxiation. This disaster resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,746 people and 3,500 livestock. The event remains one of the most tragic natural disasters related to volcanic activity and has since prompted scientific efforts to monitor and mitigate the risks of similar occurrences in other lakes with volcanic activity. If this is not the event you are referring to, please provide more details, and I can give you more specific information.
