Heavily influenced by dark fairytales, folklore, urban legends and true crime and a master of blending gothic, horror, and suspense, Pelayo's latest is a dark retelling of Sleeping Beauty and explores what this classic tale reveals about death and the particular role of women in the fairytale. As a Chicago native, the city's dark history often plays a major role in her work and in her latest she explores haunted Archer Avenue and the Resurrection Mary legend, one of America's most famous vanishing hitchhikers.
