Listen "Sermon: Remember, You Too Are Mortal"

Episode Synopsis

The greatest, most glorious achievement a Roman general could hope to achieve is the honor of holding a Triumph.  The general would parade through the city with symbols of his brave conquests and be treated figuratively (and somewhat literally) like a god-king.  Peculiar enough, a slave is said to have been present on the procession chariot with the general who would repeatedly whisper "Remember, you too are mortal."
As Christians, it can be enticing to sit back and rest on our achievements.  Perhaps we have a long, celebrated career in ministry.  Perhaps we gave a large sum of money to a mission trip.  Perhaps we executed a huge event or ministry activity that few have ever done.  Regardless, its important that we not get lazy and fool ourselves into thinking "well... I've done enough".  We must remember that we too are mortal... or in this case that we too are sinners.  Our actions count for nothing compared to where our hearts stand.  If we are relying on our actions and achievements to find favor with God, one day we may find ourselves standing before the almighty sorely disappointed in his response.
As Jesus walked the hill to Golgotha, he didn't stop halfway up and proclaim, "I've done more than anyone else and I think I can stop now."  No, Jesus continued up the hill.  We must seek to push ourselves up the hill with Christ, maintaining a joy and peace in our endurance as we live a life worthy of Christ's calling.
