The Islamic tradition recognises a point at which a young person becomes responsible for their own life. 
A key element of maturity is accepting responsibility for your own decisions, no longer permitting the past to define how you act. 
This is a deeply challenging concept, but when engaged with from a place of love, it can be life-altering.
