Episode Synopsis

We are all leaders from the battlefield to business, to family and friends. In this amazing episode we learn from former Royal Marine Commando Officer and Leadership expert Dom Weldon.

Summary Dom served 9 years as a Royal Marines Commando Officer, leading diverse teams within larger organisations around the world including operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Although the context and stakeholders differed in every role, the common requirement throughout was gaining strategic clarity, aligning missions within senior leaders’ intent, and executing effectively while remaining agile in a dynamic environment.

On leaving the marines, he worked in sales and relationship management at BlackRock and Citi. While at Citi, he worked in a smaller business within Markets of 300 employees and $500m revenue. In this capacity, he saw the challenges the business faced with respect to culture and values, strategy execution, communication and alignment.

Although his industry had changed, he noticed the challenges were the same as those in the marines, especially on combat operations: namely, how do you balance alignment with autonomy across an organisation to enable a dynamic and synchronised effort on the front line? How do you cascade communication through a structure while empowering leaders to take ownership and accountability? How do you intrinsically motivate a workforce?

Realising certain military concepts could improve business performance, he left finance in 2021 and founded Albany York, a leadership consultancy focused on teams.

He lives in south west London with his fiancée and their dog Otis.
