This is not extra credit or bonus points, it is about expanding the learning of the student. It is important that these are opportunities where students choose to do them or not rather than assignments. It is also important that students are not extrinsically rewarded with better grades or bonus points but rather see them as opportunities to push their intrinsic learning.
