To some degree or another, every missionary experiences the challenge of gospel ministry in hard soil. The Whitmans have been endeavoring in a land often referred to colloquially as the "graveyard of missionaries" because there is so little fruit to show following faithful ministry. Italy is not just the cradle of the Renaissance, great food, and the Roman Empire; it is the home, quite literally, of Catholicism. Modern Italians are not simply hard to reach because of their catholic religiosity though.
