Episode Synopsis

About the Episode:
Serving our community is one of the surest ways to fulfill our life’s purpose. People serve in many capacities: through volunteer work, advocacy, donation, or in Zaylore’s case, writing a book. Author of Our Gay History in Fifty States, Zaylore gives voice to many LGBTQIA+ stories. His book tells the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ Americans, state by state. Zaylore’s book recognizes the significant individuals, places, and events around the country that pave the way for LGBTQ Equality. As an advocate for equal rights, Zaylore discussed several ways that we can achieve equality for everyone; some of these bold actions included, speaking truth to power, demanding justice, and holding our elected officials accountable. Furthermore, Zaylore states that what we are missing in today’s political climate is the ability to listen and understand the other side before speaking; we can have passionate dialogues with people who we may not agree with and still go out for dinner or drinks with them afterwards. Having the ability to interact with people who are different than us is crucial and will help expand our worldview. What we need to acknowledge though is that we must force ourselves to engage with people from diverse communities and educate ourselves on diverse issues in order to find commonalities with others. Lastly, Zaylore believes that to truly lead a satisfying life and be a productive member in society, we must find activities that uplift our spirt, stay connected with people whom we cherish, and treat everybody equally; all of this is doable if we set the right intentions.
