Professor Michael Vallely is a leading professor and cardiothoracic surgeon with a research interest focus on minimising adverse outcomes in high risk and older patients and in development of novel cardiac devices.He has also been appointed Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery within the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH), the future home of the VHI.Until recently, Professor Vallely was a Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai Heart and the Icahn School of Medicine. He has previously held academic surgery positions as Professor of Surgery at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.He is an Australian trained academic cardiothoracic surgeon with a PhD from the University of Sydney. His academic and clinical interests are in elderly, complex and high-risk patients, including the application of anaortic off-pump, all-arterial coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), minimal access, structural heart and transcatheter techniques.His other interests include value-based healthcare, integrated healthcare, medical technology investing and the development of medical technology devices.Professor Vallely has over 140 publications in peer-reviewed journals and several published book chapters. He has presented widely at national and international meetings. He has developed and participated in several first in man procedures and first in man trials and is the senior author on publications that have contributed to changes in international treatment guidelines.
