What We Learned
Doing the work and leading the work are very different things.
Sometimes you need to stabilize and sometimes you need to challenge.
How do you create stability?
Stability comes down to trust.
Trust is lost in the little ways.
You can lose trust through declaring undeclarables.
How do you challenge your team?
Challenge is pushing your team in areas where they are naturally motivated.
People don't understand what motivates people so they don't place them in the right role.
Types of Motivation
Builder: Creates
Fixer: Solves problems
Optimizer: Maximizes efficiency
Products have lifecycles. Bring people in at different stages of the project.
A great leader of creative people accomplishes the work while developing the team to tackle new and more challenging work.
Mind Shifts for Creative Leaders
Maker to Manager
Control to Influence
Peer to Coach
How can you create more white space for your team?
Stop copying people on emails.
Have necessary meetings with necessary people.
Schedule large blocks of time to do creative work.
Alternative to Brainstorming
People are more creative on their own than in a group setting.
Give them the subject you want ideas for.
Give them time to think.
Bring everyone together and share ideas.
How do you help your team sharpen their creativity?
Be a curator.
Share ideas with your team.
Don't give them the answers.
Push them to think in new ways.
What's one thing that's helping you?
Daily habits and questions I ask myself
How do you learn best?
Through listening to audio books and processing what I've heard.
What are you learning right now?
Pain + Reflection = Process
There is a machine you can create that will help you accomplish your goals.
