Today we’re going to talk about gratitude. Gratitude and being grateful, it comes from the Latin word “Gratus” which meant pleasing, so gratitude is like the attitude of pleasure, the attitude of being pleased. And most people do not think of it in those terms, but that's why I'm here talking right now because I’ve thought of it in those terms and it has helped me *enormously.* So, you’ve probably heard people talk about gratitude lists, which if you don’t do it, maybe you should it's wonderful. You make a list of all the things in your life that you find pleasing, that you're grateful exist in your life. Like having a roof over your head, or a bed to sleep in, water to drink, games to play, friends to have fun with, family, pets, your body, in whatever condition it's in, it’s your still your body and you can still derive pleasure from existing, right? You know, you taste food, hear music, see sights. Maybe at least one of those things you do. There's so much that can be gained simply from existing, and I'm just so happy and grateful to be here, you know? To be the on the planet at this time. It's also super great because you can be appreciative for what you already have, but also what's coming. Even if you don't fully know what's coming, you can be optimistic and looking forward to it right? It's especially easy to do that after you've made your gratitude list. So, go through and make that gratitude list- make a list of all the things that are pleasing to you that you're grateful for.
And then after you have this big master list that you've written -do that tonight or now or whenever you get a chance to do that- and then continue the practice of gratitude by when you wake up in the morning immediately say to yourself “Today I am grateful for *blank*” -whatever it is.
And then when you go to sleep at night, you can list the things that you were grateful for that happened to you that day, and you can also list the things that you're grateful for that haven't yet happened but you know are happening, and then as you go and you can just... throughout the day if you have a moment where you're feeling frustrated or really displeased with something take out 30 seconds of time to just write down three things that you're grateful for or just go over it. in your head. You know, make it your phone background, your list of gratitude, your list of gratifying things, your list of what you find pleasing, your list of happy exciting, wonderful things. So you can say “You know what? I'm grateful for flowers, I am grateful for clouds, I'm grateful for rainbows, I am grateful for unicorns, I'm grateful for-” whatever it is that you're grateful for just write it down. “I'm grateful for art, I'm grateful for music” - like anything that you like. Be happy and excited about what makes you happy and excited. And then as you go through and find things that you're happy and excited about, you will find more things to be happy and excited about, and it's just really fun how it works that way.
You know, we have spoken before on this podcast about how our brains are all about that pattern recognition and how, I think I refered to your brain as having a “Hot 100 playlist” of thoughts that it most often repeats. So, by tuning your radio station to gratitude, by Tuning in to Something Good, you will change the direction of your thoughts and thus uplift your mood, and you know, your mind feels better, and your brain physically- there are physiological changes that occur when you go down more positive neural pathways,
