Employing nonviolent resistance, he led the successful campaign for India’s independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma first applied to him in 1914 in South Africa, is now used throughout the world. Mahatma means great-souled.Mahatma can refer to any great person; in India, it is used as a title of love and respect. To me, Gandhi seemed like a holy man and very intelligent. It is this unseen power which makes itself felt and yet defies all proof, because it is so unlike all that I perceive through my senses. It transcends the senses. But it is possible to reason out the existence of God to a limited extent.
