Episode Synopsis

This fortnight we mark Neurodiversity Celebration Week - a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences - we are talking to two medical experts with decades of experience in the field of diagnosing, supporting and empowering young people to understand themselves better and take pride in being different. Dr Deborah Woodman has over 25 years of experience working in some of the UK’s leading NHS healthcare providers. A clinical psychologist and clinical neuropsychologist, Dr Woodman has spent her career working with children and young people with complex health, neurological and neurodevelopmental needs. She is joined by Dr Mike Farquhar, Consultant in Children’s Sleep Medicine at Evelina Children’s Hospital, London, an expert in supporting sleep in children and young people with complex medical difficulties. Mike also brings his own unique perspective on neurodiversity, and not only because of the overlap between neurodiverse conditions like autism and ADHD and sleep medicine:  Mike has himself recently received a later in life diagnosis of autism. Dr Woodman and Dr Farquhar join us today to shed light on the current and future landscape of neurodiversity, at a time when waiting times for diagnoses are high, and funding for support in schools can be increasingly challenging for parents and young people to access. If you're a parent, carer or educator and would like more information about working with Dr Woodman, you can visit her website and her Linked Profile here. Hosted on Acast.
