Episode Synopsis

Most sufferers overcome their emetophobia in 6-8 weeks with our programme, however some can take much longer... why is that? Are they not putting enough effort in? Are they too busy?  Is there too much else going on in their lives? Do they have other co-morbid issues such as OCD, anorexia or intrusive thoughts?  Are some people 'just more complex'?In this weeks podcast, Joe and Rob explore the subject of 'why so some people take longer to overcome their emetophobia'? Click on the image below to play the video...If you think about mental health and thriving on a scale of say, 1 to 100, everyone is at a different point on that scale when they start the programme. Some people when they start are more thriving than others (they score higher on the chart) and therefore less effort and time is required to make the - lesser - changes they need to make, in order to get themselves completely thriving, and over their emetophobia. So if you have less work to do (less changes to make) it stands to reason that you'll probably get that done before someone who has more work to do, right? Also, if you have a lot of stress and pressures - other than those directly related to your emetophobia - as you are working your way through the programme, they are going to make it harder for you to find the time and energy to devote to the programme, as you have other things taking up your time and resources. If you happen to also be suffering from a co-morbid symptom such as OCD, anorexia, intrusive thoughts or generalised anxiety disorder then you need to cut yourself some slack as you clearly have a lot on your plate at the moment... you are likely to feel like you are walking though thick mud, against the wind! Finally, the other thing that slows things down for ALL emetophobes, is their perfectionism. Trying to apply the programme 'perfectly', and do everything 'just right', makes things much harder. Perfectionists tend to be very 'black and white' in their thinking, which means they tend to see their progress through the programme as either 'great', or 'rubbish'... if they see it as 'great' they tend to be on a high, feeling everything is going well, and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. If they see it as 'rubbish' however, they are likely to keep creating major blips, doubt their ability and doubt the programme, which in turn will leave them feeling quite hopeless, powerless and helpless. Emetophobia is a debilitating phobia, which significantly impacts your life: sufferers are chronically anxious and go to great lengths to avoid encountering anything sickness-related, which provides temporary relief but often results in a rollercoaster of anxiety, fear and exhaustion. Issues associated with emetophobia include: OCD, eating difficulties, anxiety-related gastric problems, phagophobia, tocophobia and more. Our goal is to raise awareness of this severe phobia and provide a solution for sufferers and their families. You do not need to live with Emetophobia - you can COMPLETELY overcome it.
