Episode Synopsis

In this talk, Robert David Greenberg discusses controversies and unresolved issues surrounding the status of Muslim Slavs in the Western Balkans. The states that emerged from the former Yugoslavia have established new hierarchies of official and regional or minority languages. The new languages, largely considered to be mutually intelligible, co-exist within the borders of the new states, and this reality has posed significant challenges to language planners.

Robert David Greenberg is Dean of Arts and Professor of Linguistics at The University of Auckland. He is a specialist in South Slavic languages and linguistics and has worked on sociolinguistic issues in the former Yugoslavia.
