Listen "Silence in a Year Day 75 The Fire of Silence"

Episode Synopsis

Today Cardinal Sarah says that there is no silence in schools and wonders how you can read or even concentrate in all that noise. This reflection made me immediately to think about my daughter. My daughter is an avid reader, wonder where she got that from . From the time she was young she carried multiple books with her everywhere we went, because “you never know when you may have an opportunity to read”, like in a line at the grocery store, yes true story. Well, after a while I would catch her sitting in the middle of the room reading, during a family gathering. What I did not know until many years later was that she sat with her fingers in her ears, she was trying to drown out the noise. After many years of practice, she no longer puts her fingers in her ears but can read undisturbed in the middle of a crowd. This is how she learned to read in a loud cafeteria or classroom. So, the answer to Cardinal Sarah question would be, practice, as my daughter did.It comes from practice and will, how about that in our prayer life, in sitting with God in the silence of our hearts, in the middle of a loud department store. Yes, it can be done, through faithful practice. In Jeremiah 7 people could not hear God and Jeremiah says “This is the nation that does not listen to the voice of the LORD, its God, or take correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech.” They could not hear God because they were allowing the noise of the world to harden their hearts.Cardinal Sarah also talks about how the mastery of silence is like a fragile flame in a raging ocean.Take away; Once you have mastered the gift of silent with God, how can you keep that flame alive in the midst of the noise in your life?Today a group of women will be arriving at the retreat center to attend this weekend’s Cursillo. I ask that you please pray for these women that they are able to silence the noise in their heart, that they be open to the Holy Spirit in whatever why it may move them.
