Episode Synopsis

It is very easy for me to want to talk and often hard for me to just remain silent. Today Cardinal Sarah is reminding me that prudence in speech, prudence in the situations I place myself, are so very important to the spiritual life. It is easy for us to offend our soul or the soul of others - to disrupt the flow of grace. More times than not it is better to remain silent within a conversation, to redirect the course of the conversation through the quiet wisdom of the Holy Spirit. To not enter into something that will not bear fruit although it seems very enticing to do so. It immediately reminds me of the forbidden fruit. Through spending time with God in silence, our souls are tuned to prudence and turning away from these situations of temptation. Many are very subtle but they harm our souls and the souls of others. Just the other night I was in a conversation at church that started to turn toward what another person was doing. It did not really matter that the comments seemed justified - there was not fruit in the conversation. The silence of the Spirit said “Walk Away” - and so I did with a gentle hand on the shoulder saying, Let’s move on before we begin to gossip. Many times have I failed at this, but God continues to give me the prudence to respond only to that which is fruitful
