Effective communication between a coach and client is often overcomplicated unnecessarily. Open-ended questions are essential to gain insight into the client’s thoughts and feelings, and it’s important to understand the client’s roles and responsibilities without projecting one’s own biases onto them. Coaches should focus on powerful questions to expand knowledge and bring about change. Trust the process of coaching – it is a simple dialogue that can lead a coaching session in unexpected directions. Noticing important cues such as pauses or shifts in body language, tonality, and emotion is a result of being present in the moment with a client. Coaches who create major impact within their practice not only know how to ask questions of others but continue their own internal work by asking these same questions of themselves.
