Mastering Mental Performance

00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:14.000
Welcome to the Circuit of Success.

00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:16.000
I'm your host Brett Gilliland in today.

00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:18.000
I've got Kevin DeShazo with me, Kevin. How

00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:19.000
you doing?

00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:23.000
Fantastic. How are you? I am good. How's,

00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:24.000
Oklahoma City treating you today?

00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:26.000
It's great.

00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000
Not too wintery of weather yet. It's actually

00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:31.000
pretty nice. So it's a it's good Monday.

00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:33.000
Awesome. It's a little chilly and rainy here,

00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:35.000
but it it could be a lot worse.

00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:36.000
So that's our item. I'm just outside of

00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:37.000
Saint Louis.

00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:40.000
And, so you are in Oklahoma City.

00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:43.000
You are the father of three boys. We

00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:45.000
both have something in common. We both have

00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:46.000
an asher.

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000
And you are married and running some businesses.

00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:51.000
Certified mental performance,

00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:54.000
mastery coach and founded, field house, media.

00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:56.000
And, we'll talk about some other stuff as

00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:58.000
well. So, before we get started though, Kevin,

00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:00.000
could you just give us a little lay

00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:01.000
of the land? What's made you the man

00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:02.000
you are today and what's some of the

00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.000
backstory for you?

00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:06.000
Oh, what is that's a big question. What

00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:08.000
has made me the man I am seeing?

00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:09.000
Probably who has made me the man I

00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:10.000
am seeing?

00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.000
You know, I've I've been really fortunate to

00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:16.000
have great mentors, great people,

00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:18.000
in my life from a a young age.

00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:21.000
And I think the the two things I've

00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:23.000
learned probably the most from from all those

00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:26.000
mentors combined is one, the power of speaking

00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:28.000
belief in the people. These are always people

00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:31.000
who believed something in me. Saw something in

00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.000
me, called those things up in me,

00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:36.000
treated me as if I I've I've already

00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:37.000
was those things

00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:40.000
and two, just the, their, the way they

00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:42.000
modeled their life. Right? They were people who

00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:45.000
were accountable. They were disciplined. They were consistent.

00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:48.000
What's it was important to me. They were

00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:50.000
they were all rooted in faith.

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.000
So they were good husbands, good dads, good

00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.000
business people, whatever their job was.

00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:57.000
And so I've always had had good mentors.

00:01:57.000 --> 00:01:58.000
And then over the years, you know, I

00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.000
went into the corporate world right out of

00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:02.000
college. Well, that's not true.

00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.000
Don't have to go down this down down

00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.000
this revolt, but I was I was an

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:08.000
embalmer's assistant for six months immediately out of

00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:09.000
college. Wow.

00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:12.000
Then then went into the corporate world. Then

00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:13.000
started my own business,

00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:15.000
and businesses. And so lots of ups and

00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000
downs of peaks and valleys and failures and

00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:18.000
successes,

00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:21.000
think all those things, all those experiences, the

00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:23.000
wins and losses, you know, they they each

00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:25.000
kinda mold you into. If you allow them

00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:26.000
to, if you use them the right way,

00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:27.000
they mold you into,

00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:30.000
who you're supposed to be. Yeah. And you

00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:31.000
grew up in Oklahoma?

00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.000
Mostly, I was in Missouri, until sixth grade.

00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:37.000
And so I moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma,

00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:40.000
right after I finished sixth grade, and dinner,

00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000
Oklahoma since then. Nice. And doing some work

00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000
with Oklahoma, the university. Right? That's right. Yeah.

00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000
We we do a lot with their athletic

00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000
department, both from their administration, you know, jokes

00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.000
to Leon, their athletic director, their leadership team,

00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:53.000
their department,

00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:55.000
but also work with a lot of their

00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:56.000
sports teams,

00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.000
worked deeply with football team, travel with the

00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:00.000
football team. So it's a it's it's a

00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:03.000
fun a fun client to have. Yeah. So

00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:04.000
speaking of football, so how did,

00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000
how did you think it went last night?

00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:08.000
They picked the top four teams.

00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:12.000
Well, Florida State's also a client. Yeah. Oh.

00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.000
So so so didn't didn't love them being

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:15.000
left out.

00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.000
You know, it's it's a there's probably a

00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:20.000
bigger societal perspective to take on it, but

00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:21.000
it was

00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:23.000
you know, the committee went, in my opinion,

00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:26.000
they went on feelings based on that I

00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:28.000
rather rather than based on facts.

00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:30.000
I just think it's tough to leave,

00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.000
a Power five undefeated team

00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.000
out, you know,

00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.000
in in place of teams who have who

00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:38.000
have lost skin. Now for that fourth spot,

00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000
I think there could be a lot of

00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.000
argument. Whether it's Bamba or Georgia or Texas

00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:43.000
or

00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.000
even Ohio State, you know, they're only lost

00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000
being to Michigan. There's a lot of argument

00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:49.000
for that fourth spot, but my opinion, Florida

00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:50.000
State should have been should have been a

00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.000
guarantee. Yep. Yeah. It's tough. And I guess

00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:54.000
next year going to what? Ten teams or

00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:57.000
twelve teams, whatever they're doing next year. Yeah.

00:03:57.000 --> 00:03:58.000
Twelve will change from that. But then you'll

00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:01.000
still have the thirteenth team. That'll be mad.

00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000
That's right. And, That's right. That's where I

00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:04.000
go because you're right. It's like the twelve

00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:05.000
team solves

00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.000
this discussion in terms of, like, okay. They

00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:10.000
would have all had a chance.

00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:12.000
And and I've been, you know, hoping and

00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:14.000
waiting for this this twelve team for a

00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.000
while because I my general opinion is if

00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.000
you're in the top 08:10, maybe twelve,
