The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) in South Africa has proposed amendments to the National Credit Act (NCA), which have sparked significant public concern, particularly among students and political groups. The draft regulations, published on August 13, 2025, aim to enhance access to credit for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by allowing credit bureaus to include educational debt in credit reports. This inclusion could potentially lead to the blacklisting of individuals with unpaid student loans.
