There is much emphasis in scripture to forget former things, sin, the past and all that that opposes the new, but there is also much emphasis on NOT forgetting certain things. God isn't contradicting Himself here, He instructs us to forget former things but not to forget Him and what He has done for us, so it sounds like we forget the experience and all the feelings that evoked for us, but we don't forget who came and helped us to climb out and move on. To forget what hinders us in the now is a choice, just as remembering what God has done for us is a choice too.
