Series Summary:
David, a soldier recently back from Afghanistan, is reluctant when his eccentric family sets him up on a date with his high school ex Beth. At dinner, Beth reveals David has a 10-year-old son, Luke.
Furious his family hid this, David learns they kept Luke a secret per a deal with his ill wife's mother. After confronting his uncle Vinnie, David decides to build a relationship with wheelchair-bound Luke, struggling to bond over their sci-fi fandoms.
Meanwhile, with David's help, Vinnie overcomes his fears to accept his gay son Connor. When bully Mason assaults Luke, Vinnie gets revenge by having Mason beaten. But Mason has David and Beth arrested for assaulting his son. Mason threatens vulnerable Luke home alone until Vinnie intervenes.
David and Beth's relationship deepens, but Beth later admits she cheated on David in college with his cousin Connor, prompting a devastated David to lash out and leave town. His complicated family ties in tatters, David flees heartbroken, needing distance from Beth and his disabled son Luke.
