One of the best and most important things I have found since I've been practicing mindfulness is that it helps you develop the ability to pause, think and ACT rather than RE-ACT to a situation.   
It's that little space in between the stressor and the response where you can actually choose how you're going to react to it.   
The more you practice this the more you're going to be able to respond with your "thinking" brain rather than your "feeling" brain.   
It helps us be a little calmer, kinder, and more thoughtful which is massively important especially at times like these.
