Magic is synonymous with paganism but that is due in part to misconceptions. Magic exists in the Jewish and Christian traditions too and not all pagans used magic or performed divination. Magic is not a form of devotional piety for pagans. Historically, the only form of magic that seems to be associated with piety is prognostication in the service of the state/ethnos. Even other forms of prognostication were really separate from normal religious activities.
