After all of the amazing things that God had done through Elijah, imagine being Elisha and thinking that you were going to follow Elijah as a prophet. How terrifying it must have been thinking that you would have to fill Elijah's shoes.

Elijah would soon be leaving Elisha and Elisha was not fond of that thought. He loved and respected Elijah. And more than that, how could he possibly replace Elijah? Elijah held such a prominent place in Elisha's heart and mind.

There is a danger in elevating the messenger above the message, loving the messenger more than the message. It can be easy to fall into this with pastors. To love a preaching style or a personality more than the message. This is dangerous for hearts.

But, God teaches us that the power of the prophet and the power of the pastor is not the man, but the Holy Spirit that empowers them. It is this Spirit, working through the Word that creates and strengthens faith, moves you from death to life, and opens eternal life to you.

So, give thanks for the messengers that God puts in your life. But always love the message more than the messenger.
