Story of Peterloo

Por: Francis Archibald Bruton
On August 16, 1819, approximately 60,000 people converged at St. Peter‚As Fields in Manchester, united in their demand for parliamentary reform. What began as a peaceful rally turned tragic when a troop of Hussars and local yeomanry charged into the crowd, brandishing clubs, swords, and sabres, resulting in 18 fatalities and over 700 injuries. The aftermath of the Peterloo Massacre sparked numerous trials and inquiries, cementing its place as a pivotal moment in the history of the British labour movement. Francis Archibald Brutons poignant account, published for the centenary, meticulously examines contemporary testimonies, offering a dispassionate yet deeply moving narrative of that fateful day.
