Narcissism causes people to create their own reality that is completely independent from all the facts that are presented and they think they can do whatever they want no matter what. You’ve either got ‘Prince Charming’ who has a very dark side, or you’ve got an entitlement mentality where individuals think that because Daddy’s the King or Mummy’s the Queen or a big hot shot attorney or doctor, that they do not have to grow up and there are no consequences for their actions. A lot of this is down to the parents.
We live in a world where we can look up the answer to any question, we can have food delivered to our doorstep in 15 minutes through our phone. Everything is about convenience and convenience is the opposite of excellence. In any situation or decision we make, we have two paths that we can go on; the easy path that feels good in the moment, which leads to a declining set of outcomes, and the harder path which is the right choice to take because they lead to better outcomes. Every day there are 4-5 decisions that determine the outcome for that day as a whole, and when you add up good days after good days you get good weeks, months, years and you ultimately can build a great career and a spectacular life by making those little difficult decisions.
I’ve been successful in my career, I have the opportunity to give my kids things they did not have – partially because of technologies that didn’t exist, partially time and attention, going places and doing things. It’s in our nature to want to share that, to give it to our kids, to have our children have a better life than we had and to avoid some of the hard work and pain that we had to go through. But, it’s that hard work that made us who we are. We missed meals and we struggled, when I first built my businesses I didn’t know where my next pay cheque was coming from and there was risk and sleepless nights. We want to avoid this for our kids because we love them, but there’s this balance between loving them and making them independent, well-functioning members of society and the pendulum swings back and forth. Unfortunately for society it has swung so far to the ‘make things easy for them, coddle them, bubble-wrap them’ that it has produced a generation of kids who can’t figure stuff out and have never had difficulty.
We need to make things more difficult. If you touched the stove when you were little and it was hot you learned never to touch the stove again. If you did something stupid you either got your butt paddled, you got in trouble or you got a small scar for it and you learned your lesson, you failed a test, that was on you. Kids need to stand on their own much earlier and make little mistakes before they grow into big mistakes.
BEST MOMENTS‘Problems are generally derived from people.’‘Too many parents make life hard for their children by trying too zealously to make it easy for them.’‘Convenience kills, it is the opposite of excellence in the long range.’‘People are never bored because of the constant stream of distraction and entertainment, so they don’t learn to figure stuff out on their own.’ABOUT THE GUESTJoe Templin has led an eclectic life.As one of six kids (the only normal one, he insists) growing up in a small town and spending time on the family farm, Joe’s parents (John and Barb) instilled a love of learning, the outdoors, and a healthy disrespect for authority while still simultaneously embracing traditional values of hard work and “love thy neighbour but mind your own dang business.” This is Joe’s foundation. He was severely asthmatic but through his work ethic and love of challenge has become a martial artist and ultra distance runner. He had a speech impediment but has built a career around communicating. This habit of overcoming limitations is a theme in his life and his writings.Joe has three hooligans (Danny, Liam, and Colin) and is a very proud member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, having served multiple times as President of his local Foundation and Chapter Advisor. He has also served on the local, State, and National levels for NAIFA, is a Cubmaster (worst one ever if you ask his boys), and is involved with his local Autism Society. Serving others is important to Joe, because of how his parents raised him. Can’t get enough of Joe?
