Listen "John 1:29-34"
Episode Synopsis
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.”32 Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him. 33 I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”REFLECTIONSWritten by Ness WongImagine meeting, for the very first time, the person that you’ve been raving about for years. You were just doing your thing and suddenly, you see this amazing person coming towards you. How would you react? In today’s passage, I sensed something of John’s surprise and shock when he first met Jesus. John had been telling the Jewish leaders that he was not the ‘the One’ the people of God were waiting for, he was simply telling everyone about ‘the One’ who was much greater than himself (verse 30, see also verses 19-23). Then finally, John sees Jesus in the flesh and exclaims, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (verse 29). John is basically saying, ‘See, everyone, this is the One I have been telling you about. It was never about me, it’s all about Him! I even saw the Holy Spirit come down upon Him! He is the One whom God has sent and the Spirit proves this!’ (verses 30-34).I felt challenged by John’s response to Jesus on two levels. First, within my own heart, do I eagerly anticipate Jesus’ return? Or have I sunk into complacency and lost this zeal? And secondly, thinking about others, do I readily tell people about Christ and how He came to take away our sins? Do I also let people know that He is coming back again?John knew that Jesus was coming and he was ready to meet Him. Jesus found him faithfully telling others about Him just as God had sent him to do. Especially as we approach Christmas, I need to repent of my lukewarm heart and ask God to make me ready to share the true reason for season: the hope that I have in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:15).
