Listen "Dave and Jan Dravecky"
Episode Synopsis
Episode 42
Dave Dravecky's story is one of finding hope, courage, and perseverance in the midst of deep uncertainty. In 1988, he was in the peak of his Major League Baseball career. Pitching for the San Francisco Giants, his Opening Day win was overshadowed later that season when doctors discovered cancer in his throwing arm and had to remove half of his deltoid muscle.
He came back a year later, defying significant odds. Despite being told by doctors, “Short of a miracle, you’ll never pitch again,” he pitched a 4-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds in his first start back, but sadly his comeback lasted just one more start.
In his next start against the Montreal Expos, his arm split in two. His career was done.
After his comeback and fall from the mound, the cancer returned. The arm refused to get better and he was forced to retire in November 1989. His arm, shoulder blade, and the left side of his collarbone had to be amputated for fear the cancer would spread and possibly take his life.
In this conversation, he and his wife Jan share stories of his career, the season in and around his cancer battle of career-ending injury, and how their faith has been shaped by all of it. It's become a platform for him to share his story of hope through suffering and how his faith in God has been strengthened.
Dave and Jan founded Endurance with Jan and Dave Dravecky, a nonprofit organization located in Colorado, and he's the author of "When You Can't Come Back."
