Paul and Glenn are back for another episode. This week we will look back at some of the well-known sporting disasters where innocent players and spectators tragically lost their lives or were badly injured. Some of what will be discussed include:
- A long-lasting motor racing endurance event where in 1955 a driver tragically lost his life as did 83 spectators. It led to many European countries banning motor racing for a while and one country has only just recently lifted its ban.
- A famous English football club which was involved in a few tragic events in the 1980’s resulting in the loss of life of many of its fans and opposing team fans.
- 1989 Hillsborough Disaster
- The earthquake that rocked the 1989 World Series
- Munich Olympics terrorist attacks
- Munich Air Disaster
- Boston Marathon bombing
- 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht race
- Uruguay rugby team The Old Christians
- Congolese football team struck by lightning
- Ellis Park Stampede in 1991
- Ibrox Stadium disasters 1902 and 1971.
- The Superga Air Disaster in 1949 and the Torino FC
- Burnden Park Disaster in 1946
- The Bradford fire in 1985 at Valley Parade Stadium
- Spectator deaths from riots e.g., Egypt 2012, Ghana 2001.
- Nepal football match and the hailstorm that led to a great loss of life.
- France 1992 at Furiani Stadium at the stand collapse resulting in 18 deaths and many injured.
- 1996 World Cup qualifying match in Guatemala
- 1982 UEFA Cup match in Moscow.
