Listen "Don't Let Sexual Assaults Define You! – Paul D. Lowe & Jenn Junod"
Episode Synopsis
On this episode Paul is joined by returning guest Jenn Junod for a short but deep and powerful discussion about her story of surviving sexual abuse, something that would set most people back for a long time, if not the rest of their lives.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I was sexually abused as a child from the ages of 8-10 and then also raped at the age of 17. There are still times I struggle with what I went through even though one incident was 25 years ago and another was 20 years ago. It doesn’t matter when it happened, we worked so hard on burying or over-compensating for the issue or never dealing with it, there’s a time and a place for all of us to work through it even if it comes up again and again. Recovery is not a linear journey, it is something I feel like I get through and am doing great, but a few weeks or even years later I feel like I need to deal with it again. I don’t want to, but I have to.
I was promiscuous for a long time because I was looking to be loved and I thought that was how to be intimate with someone. It wasn’t until I was almost 30 and found a healthy relationship that I started working through a lot of these issues I was having. I never felt worthy, so I kept going from relationship to relationship that was very toxic, that would take advantage of me, with gas-lighting or with narcissists. I always felt like I was putting in so much and I would get burned out or realise that after a few years that they were treating me horribly and get out.
There’s a difference between authenticity and vulnerability. Authenticity is being open to sharing and vulnerability is talking about how you feel about it. I can talk about all the things I’ve been through in bullet points, which is very authentic and I can share it with anyone. Yet, where I have been very detached and go in and out is being detached from feeling about any of these things. It’s how I got through a lot of the things I went through; detaching myself from the situation. I knew they happened and I could tell you about them and some of the experiences, but I couldn’t tell you how they made me feel because I was so detached I didn’t know how they felt. Yet through therapy, self-development courses and being in a healthy relationship, now I have found that I feel disgusting at times because I think about it.
When we go through trauma our body keeps score, and this shows up as depression and anxiety etc, but it can also lead to auto-immune diseases and the body not digesting as well, so many other things because our body is harbouring these feelings that are happening to us. Research has shown how our emotional and mental state can really affect our physical state.
BEST MOMENTS
‘I like to think of it and work through my past trauma as a bus where I go to the destination and I feel like I’ve worked on it, but I get to another destination, and I realise I have to go back one stop before I go forwards one stop.’
‘It wasn’t until I started working on my own self-worth that I found a good relationship. We’ve been together almost 5 years. But there have been times when my body goes into fight or flight mode, or I freeze, when my partner goes to cuddle with me in the morning and I first wake up with him touching me.’
‘These are things that affect us life-long, and it’s our choice to be responsible for how we react and how we move through it.’
‘When I’m on any kind of public transport and someone touches me, because they are sitting next to me, I’m on high alert because I don’t know what they’ll do next.’

ABOUT THE GUEST
Jenn has a story of her own. As a child, she suffered solitary confinement, physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, rape, divorce, abortion, cutting, and suicide attempts. Her turbulent background has forged a path to help those who are suffering, ignored and silenced. Sh!t You Don’t Want to Talk About is a place people can come to find hope and healing, to know they are not alone, and to finally be heard.
Clearly, Jenn’s been through plenty of sh!t most people probably don’t want to even acknowledge, let alone talk about. She thought she’d dealt with her past, but brain surgery in November 2020 unleashed a tsunami of memories that couldn’t be ignored. Working through trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar type 2, and ADHD will be a lifelong journey. Jenn strives to break the stigma of Sh!t You Don't Talk About and turn it into Sh!t 2 Talk About.
