Difficult patients cannot only create unpleasant situations but also have a negative effect on us and the clinic staff.
In this episode we reflect on how responding in an appropriate way to difficult patients helps to keep the stress away and prevents situations from escalating.
Here are some of the tips we discuss to handle difficult patients:
- Keep your communication assertive and professional
- Remain calm, speak in a calm way.
- Don't get defensive
- Be mindful of your verbal and non-verbal cues
- Be mindful of your internal bias
- Practice active listening
- Set boundaries
- Don't take things personally
- Ground yourself
- Be proactive: Seek a solution
