Originally from the United States, she completed post-doctoral research at the NASA Ames Research Center in California, is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and is founding director of Te Ao Mārama - Centre for Fundamental Inquiry, a transdisciplinary research centre at the University of Auckland exploring the origin and evolution of the Universe and its life.
