Episode Synopsis

Send us a textBeing connected to people, purpose, heart provides us mental and physical health. Without proper connection we lose our hold on life and meaning. When we don't feel connected to life, that is, to other people, and a purpose. we become alienated. Alienation produces stress, anxiety, frustration, and depression. Just 50 years ago we lived in communities, villages, neighbourhoods and we looked each other in the eyes, we talked to each other, we knew each other. These days it is so easy to become disconnected. With everyone locked into their little screens we are cutting off our humanity. Social networks create a fog between real communication and seeming like connecting. The reality of human to human is lost and a digital simulacrum takes its place. This is a very serious loss of humanity. The resulting isolation, loneliness, boredom and loss replaces the satisfaction and fulfilment of what used to pass as normal shmoozing, talking about personal and social concerns. We cannot forget all the horrible catastrophes mounting before us: Climate change, pollution, terrorists, extremists, poverty and disease, the world seems to be falling apart. The solution is to make a connection with those around us. If we each make an effort to be there for each other, we can make a difference and we can change the course of history. But, as always, change requires effort. I suggest, as a beginning, a time out from screen myopia and turning your attention to the person next to you.If you put your energy in someone beside yourself you might discover new ideas, new information, new people. Allow your curiosity to blossom about them - place your interest not in yourself but in others. What are they wearing? What do they value? What is their job and how do they think? Why do they think that? People are the final frontier. Each one of us contains limitless dimensions. Exploration gives us joy, purpose and a sense of the unknown. It is also fun, sometimes confusing and frustrating, but if we consider each person we meet as our teacher, events will turn into learning more about ourselves than we could have ever imagined. This could be a world of peace, freedom and equality. The tendency to look for others to do the heavy lifting is not working. We each have to wade into the waters and do our bit, holding each other’s hands in a team effort. Don’t wait for leaders and politicians to do what they will never do: make this world a better place. Do it yourself, with others, to bring our world into balance. Thank you for making the effort. It brings hope, connections, purpose and joy. It helps connect you to here and now, fulfilment and peace.Salaam Alaykum, murids, seekers, curious and interested listeners,We appreciate you, and are happy to share our Sufi Message.
