Listen "No Horses Are Alike in Character"
Episode Synopsis
As horses go, none are alike in character, and even tho some colts might be from the same mother and father, alike in color and markings, none will be alike in thinking and acting, just as it is with human families or with crowds. The bad might come out of the best, and the other way around. ... But I think the reader will get a fair idea, and maybe see as I do, a sort of likeness to the human in their faithfulness, or trickery or scheming bad or good acting, all in their different ways. This is a quote from the Preface of Horses I've Known by Will James.I read this when I was a kid, but then forgot about it in middle age. I tried various methods promoted by various clinicians to fix the problems I was having with some challenging horses. Those methods were not completely successful and I got hurt several times. Finally I remembered this guidance from Will James and it's made all the difference. The Second Half of Life advantage is the ability to combine the lessons from a number of teachers in a creative way to fit the needs of the rider and the horse. Here's a link to the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society. And a link to the Second Half Horsemanship website.
