Listen "Direct Primary Care | Richard Samuel M.D., part I"

Episode Synopsis

The Rotations team welcomes Dr. Richard Samuel, primary care physician and "direct care" practitioner and advocate. Dr. Samuel talks about the differences between the current insurance-dominated medical economy and the practice of direct care, which preceded health insurance billing, but is making a quiet comeback among independent care providers and patients.

Direct care is a subscription style of fee structure, wherein patients pay a monthly fee and are able to see their doctor as needed. Patient panels are smaller and Dr. Samuel is able to spend more time with each patient - and even do house calls. Is this sustainable in a medical industry dominated by the insurance billing fee structure?

Rotations is a production of Media in Medicine, a family of medical storytelling initiatives developed by faculty and research staff from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Scripps College of Communication. Views and opinions expressed here are our own or those of our guests and do not necessarily represent those of the colleges or Ohio University.
