Listen "Critter of the Week:"
Episode Synopsis
Jesse and Forest and Bird's Chief Executive Nicola Toki talk about this large stonefly. It is a beautiful green colour, although they have colour variation as some yellow adults are also found. The nymphs of this stonefly are aquatic, living in cold stony streams and rivers of native bush throughout New Zealand. They are especially sensitive to water pollution and sedimentation, and their presence is usually an indicator of high water quality. As such, scientists often use their presence and distribution for bio-monitoring.
