The New Birth is essentially an instantaneous process of putting off the Old Man (who is according to Adam) and putting on the New Man (who is according to Christ) in your spirit by the operation of the Holy Spirit (Col. 3:9-10). Having experienced the New Birth, thereby becoming a new creation in Christ, it is expected of you to put off the imprints, mentalities, ways, or patterns of the Old Man which are still stored in your soul (will, mind and emotions) and to put on that of the New Man, who was "created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness."
