The last of five “sacred doors” in Rome and at the Vatican will be closed on January 6, 2026. Around 30 million Catholics have made a pilgrimage there in 2025, proclaimed by Pope Francis to be a special “year of Jubilee.” By walking through those doors, pilgrims hoped to earn indulgences facilitating an escape from the suffering of Purgatory, either for them or their deceased loved ones.
