Listen "Self Regulation – First of the 5 Needs Areas"

Episode Synopsis

Lauren discusses the first need of the 5 Needs Areas - self-regulation/emotional regulation. What is self-regulation? Being able to monitor and manage your energy state, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Adults have the intellectual and emotional capacity to change their emotional states. This is much harder for kids since their brains are not as developed. The Prefrontal Cortex (IE Thinking Brain) is not fully developed until the late teens or 20’s. If kids are exposed to chronic, elevated, or traumatic stress, regulating their emotions is even harder. Lauren discusses helpful tips such as: List of Core Emotions - a helpful tool from Brene Brown. This is a handy reminder when describing emotions to kids. Touch your palm to your forehead as an easy physical reminder to return to your Thinking Brain. The 5 Needs Areas are discussed in great detail as part of the Emotional Intelligence Blueprint program developed by The Behavior Hub. It’s a 4-step program that is simple, easy, and can be applied to anyone’s life without a lot of extra work. Lauren teaches how to embed these skills as a daily practice and to integrate them into what you’re already doing. Examples of free tools to use for sharing audio or video recordings:Loom – Video sharing (5 minute limit)Marco Polo – Video recording (no time limit)Voxer – voice, text, photo & videoAudio recording appsI answer this week’s listener question during the episode:How do we create time to share strategies with families?
